First Quarter 2024 results for JetBlue shows loss of $716 million

JetBlue has released details of its first-quarter results in 2024, showing a net loss of $145 million, based on revenues of $2.2 billion.

"Thanks to our incredible crewmembers and our reinvigorated focus on improving reliability, our operation performed above plan in the first quarter, resulting in revenue and costs coming in better than expectations," said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlue’s chief executive officer. "As we look to the full year, significant elevated capacity in our Latin region, which represents a large portion of JetBlue’s network, will likely continue to pressure revenue and we expect a setback in our expectations for the full year. We have full confidence that continuing to take action on our refocused standalone strategy is the right path forward to ultimately return to profitability again."

"We've begun rolling out the initial components of our refocused plan. In the first quarter, we announced a number of significant network changes, which are designed to free up unprofitable flying and reallocate it to proven leisure markets where JetBlue has historically won" said Marty St. George, JetBlue’s president. "Demand remained healthy in peak periods, and in particular, we saw encouraging performance from our domestic and transatlantic flying, as well as continued outsized demand for our premium seating options."

JetBlue's new BluePrint system
New York's hometown airline, JetBlue, is introducing what it claims is a personalized inflight experience platform that is designed to offer passengers the chance to customise their travel journey, beginning with new inflight entertainment features.

At-Home Entertainment in the Sky

As JetBlue continues to innovate industry-leading onboard technology, Blueprint by JetBlue brings new seatback touchscreen features that mimic what customers are used to experiencing with their favourite streaming platforms at home. Some of the new functions that customers can look forward to seeing on their seatback screens include:

Watch party: Watch the same film or TV show at the exact same time with up to five other customers on the flight. JetBlue is the first airline to allow up to six customers to watch entertainment content at the same time to enjoy family-style viewing. Play and pause can be controlled on all linked screens, regardless of where each viewer is seated.
Content recommendations: Receive personal recommendations for inflight entertainment based on previous viewing history.
Pick up where you left off: Whether connecting with a layover or flying next month, never miss the end of a film or television show—automatically pick up where you left off from flight to flight.
Saved favorites: Save film and TV show selections to watch on future flights so you can spend less time searching and more time watching.
Saved settings: Accessibility and system settings, such as volume, language, parental controls and close captions preferences can now be saved and carried over from flight to flight.
Content partnerships: First-of-its-kind partnerships such as JetBlue’s exclusive streaming partner, Peacock, provide customers with access to exclusive entertainment and offers.
These new personalization features on JetBlue’s award-winning inflight entertainment system will give customers a bespoke inflight experience, not only throughout their current journey, but extending into subsequent flights when customers opt-in to securely authenticate their profiles on AVANT seatback touchscreens.

JetBlue launches Bost - Paris transatlantic service

JetBlue has expanded its transatlantic offering with a new service between Boston and Paris.  Flights will operate daily on JetBlue’s Airbus A321 Long Range (LR) aircraft with 24 redesigned Mint Suite seats, 114 core seats and the sleek and spacious Airspace cabin interior. The A321 - offering the range of a wide-body but with the economics of a single-aisle aircraft- allows JetBlue to effectively disrupt the transatlantic market with the airline’s award-winning service and low fares. In addition to Paris, JetBlue offers daily service to London, Amsterdam, and most recently initiated seasonal service to Dublin from Boston.

“The response to our New York-Paris flight has been overwhelming and we’ve been looking forward to adding a daily flight from Boston as well,” said Dave Clark, head of revenue and planning, JetBlue. “Boston customers have not had a lot of choices when flying to Paris, so we are more than happy to step in with affordable fares and an incredible onboard experience to shake things up and finally bring some real competition into this market.”

“JetBlue has been a great partner to Logan for many years and we are excited that they are launching Boston - Paris,” said Massport’s Interim CEO and Director of Aviation Ed Freni. “This new flight gives our passengers even more choice to visit Europe and all the sights across the Atlantic.”

In addition, JetBlue plans to add a second daily flight from New York’s JFK to Paris starting on June 20th.

JetBlue set to axe many flights

New York's hometown airline is seeking to cut costs and return to profitability after ending its very costly attempt to buy out budget carrier Spirit, by axing a number of flights.

TPG reports that internal communications have been issued which detail a number of routes being stopped in the next few months, including eight from Los Angeles. Among those flights being axed are ones to Miami, Reno, Seattle, Las Vegas, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

The carrier will also end all services from Kansas City from the second week in June and also pull out of international routes to the cities of Bogota, Quito and Lima.

Florida will also be hit as the schedule will reduce dramatically over the next few months as the airline tries to focus on high-performing routes.

JetBlue and Spirit give up on merger deal

JetBlue pulls out of Spirit Airlines takeover deal as it seeks to return to profitability.

The hometown airline of New York has decided to pull out of the takeover or merger as they preferred to call it, of the budget airline Spirit both carriers confirmed today.

Pulling out of the deal is costing JetBlue a compensation payment of $69 million, in addition to the $480 million the company has already spent on the project which would have made a big impact on the American aviation industry.

The two airlines have mutually agreed to terminate the $3.8bn deal as the required closing conditions, including receiving necessary legal and regulatory approvals, were unlikely to be met by the merger agreement’s outside date of July 24, 2024.Joanna Geraghty, chief executive officer of JetBlue said:  “We believed this merger was worth pursuing because it would have unleashed a national low-fare, high-value competitor to the Big Four airlines. We are proud of the work we did with Spirit to lay out a vision to challenge the status quo, but given the hurdles to closing that remain, we decided together that both airlines’ interests are better served by moving forward independently. We wish the very best going forward to the entire Spirit team.”

Following the deal being blocked by a US judge in January on anti-competition concerns, there seemed no way forward for the deal. In a recent shareholders call, the focus for JetBlue was to return to sustained profitability, drive up shareholder value and concentrate on its core strengths.  Geraghty added “We have already begun to advance our plan to restore profitability. We look forward to sharing more on our progress in the coming months.”  The airline plans to cement its network relevance in its home markets as well as enhance its products and services.

Ted Christie, Spirit's President and Chief Executive Officer said: "After discussing our options with our advisors and JetBlue, we concluded that current regulatory obstacles will not permit us to close this transaction in a timely fashion under the merger agreement,"

"We are disappointed we cannot move forward with a deal that would save hundreds of millions for consumers and create a real challenger to the dominant "Big 4" U.S. airlines. However, we remain confident in our future as a successful independent airline. We wish the JetBlue team well."

The new Skywalk branding incorporates innovative panels designed to enhance visual appeal while showcasing JetBlue’s distinctive and dynamic visual identity. In addition to serving as a functional pathway, the branding offers travel tips and destination insights, encouraging JetBlue customers to explore the diverse offerings of New York State. I am deeply grateful for these many exciting years and I feel very lucky to have worked at an airline with a brand, culture, and team that are simply unlike any other in the world.

“It has been a privilege to lead JetBlue for the past nine years, and I am proud of all we have accomplished. She guided the operation through the most turbulent time in airline history, has overseen the development and execution of new commercial initiatives, and has tirelessly worked to make JetBlue a better place for our crewmembers and customers. She has been actively engaged in our integration planning with respect to our proposed Spirit transaction. In addition, Joanna and the team have developed a strong plan for JetBlue as we work to return to profitability. For all these reasons, I know the airline is well equipped to continue driving progress and I can pass the baton with confidence knowing she is the right leader at the right time for our airline.”

Robin guided the airline through significant change and innovation, caring for the unique JetBlue culture while also instilling a value creation mindset across the organization and positioning us for sustainable future growth. We especially appreciate Robin’s willingness to continue to extend his tenure through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID crisis, and then again as we pursued our plan for the transformational Spirit acquisition.

JetBlue starts Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport - Tallahassee International Airport service

New direct service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tallahassee International Airport
JetBlue has started a new direct service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tallahassee International Airport, using its Airbus A320 aircraft.

This new route further enhances the carrier's expanding reach from Fort Lauderdale. JetBlue currently offers service in its focus cities of Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, as well as in Miami, West Palm Beach, Key West, Jacksonville, Fort Myers, Sarasota/Bradenton and Tampa. Within the state, JetBlue currently offers flights from Fort Lauderdale to Jacksonville. With Tallahassee, JetBlue will now serve over 40 destinations from Fort Lauderdale.

“We are thrilled to introduce much-needed competition and relief to a route that has suffered from high fares for decades,” said Robert Land, head of government affairs, associate general counsel, JetBlue. “This new route further demonstrates our commitment to the Sunshine State and to providing low fares, great service and connectivity to customers in Fort Lauderdale, Tallahassee and beyond.”

United States Representative, Debbie Wasserman Schultz welcomed the launch:  "I am very pleased to see additional commercial options for Floridians to travel between South Florida and our state capital. I hope this is only the beginning of connecting all parts of our state to Florida’s critical seat of government and the rest of the region through the heart of South Florida here at FLL.”

Mark Gale, FLL CEO/Director of Aviation said:  "We celebrate JetBlue's launch of nonstop jet service from Fort Lauderdale to Tallahassee as frequent fliers on this route have long desired more flight options for travel between these two Florida destinations. This is a great way to start 2024, and we look forward to continued collaboration with JetBlue as it eyes additional growth at FLL for the future."

Connecting South Florida to the State Capital

Convenient travel to Tallahassee is essential, given its critical role as the Florida state capital and as home to major universities; however, its distance from South Florida puts it just too far to easily drive. JetBlue’s daily service offers those travelling back and forth for business or education an affordable and comfortable option, while also creating opportunities for both leisure and business customers travelling from Tallahassee to connect in Fort Lauderdale to other JetBlue destinations.

“I am beyond elated that Broward residents have another option to travel to our State Capital without having to start in another county or travel to another state before getting there,” stated Florida State Representative, Chip LaMarca. “Those of us who represent the people of Broward can now get to Tallahassee on JetBlue at a reasonable cost, without contemplating a seven-hour drive.”

Tallahassee International Airport, owned and operated by the City of Tallahassee, is committed to delivering an exceptional way to fly with a fast, friendly and convenient travel experience. Focused investments by the City have grown Tallahassee International Airport into one of the largest economic drivers in the North Florida region. With the addition of new air service and major infrastructure projects underway, including the International Processing Facility, TLH is on track to serve one million passengers in 2024.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate the beginning of JetBlue’s direct, daily service between Florida’s capital city and Fort Lauderdale. We look forward to extending a warm welcome to passengers who enjoy this new air service option at Tallahassee International Airport,” said City of Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey. “Intra-state travel is a driver for our economy and our airport’s partnership with JetBlue provides a convenient connection to and from South Florida that will benefit residents and visitors alike.”

JetBlue celebrates 10 years of free unlimited fly-fi

JetBlue celebrates its 10-year anniversary of Fly-Fi—the airline’s fast, free and unlimited broadband satellite internet service. With this bold move that made JetBlue the first major U.S. airline to offer free Wi-Fi on every flight, Fly-Fi highlights JetBlue’s commitment to a customer-centric onboard experience with great service at low fares.

While Wi-Fi has now become ubiquitous in public spaces, providing free high-speed connectivity to aircraft travelling 500 mph at 35,000 feet was a unique challenge in 2013. To set a new standard of onboard connectivity, JetBlue worked with satellite internet provider Viasat to integrate the highest speeds offered inflight, making it possible for customers to have the bandwidth to stream video and use multiple devices at once—a radical capability that many airlines are just now integrating into their service. Through product testing and evolution, and the launch of second-generation satellites, JetBlue and Viasat were able to expand high-speed coverage across JetBlue’s network, paving the way for its transatlantic expansion.

“JetBlue has been a disruptor to legacy carriers and a trailblazer in onboard technology since its inception with seatback entertainment at every seat, and we have continued to raise the standard with our unparalleled inflight Wi-Fi,” said Mariya Stoyanova, director of product development, JetBlue. “Recently, we’ve seen other airlines adopt products and services that JetBlue has had onboard for years—legacy carriers realize that when we’re in-market, they can’t offer bare-bones service. We’re pushing the entire U.S. airline industry to provide a better inflight experience for travellers.”

JetBlue Flights Take Off to Belize Today

JetBlue Becomes the Only Airline to Offer Nonstop Service from New York’s JFK to Belize City

To Celebrate Launch, Limited $119 One-Way Fares Available Online Only on JetBlue.com

JetBlue today announced it has officially launched service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, Belize, with the first flight arriving in Belize this afternoon. JetBlue’s new Belize City service will operate Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, introducing the airline’s award-winning service and low fares to customers looking to fly directly from New York.

“We’re thrilled to add Belize to our growing network and offer our customers more choices to experience unique and popular destinations,” said David Jehn, vice president, network planning and airline partnerships, JetBlue. “Adding nonstop service to Belize enhances our presence in Latin America and the Caribbean and demonstrates our commitment to introducing our low fares and great service to more destinations and customers.”

“Americans comprise most international arrivals in Belize, with nearly one million visitors travelling here to experience Belize’s famous blue waters, sparkling beaches, and warm hospitality. This year alone, already over 250,000 Americans and counting have passed through this airport, representing two-thirds of all overnight visitors to Belize. JetBlue’s new flight enables travellers to experience new cultures, reconnect with their families and heritage, do business together, and at the same time remind us of how much we have in common,” said Michelle Kwan, Ambassador of the United States to Belize.

“After months of anticipation, we’re thrilled to finally welcome JetBlue’s first-ever nonstop flight to Belize, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the passengers of this inaugural flight with open arms,” said Hon. Anthony Mahler, Belize’s Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations. “With an abundance of experiences that Belize has to offer, our guests flying in from JFK are bound to discover something new about our country around every corner. We’re confident the beauty of our environment, the richness of our diverse culture, and the warmth of our people will leave New Yorkers wanting to return again soon.”

Belize is one of Central America’s most biodiverse countries. It is home to mystical Mayan caves, wondrous aquatic habitats, and lush national parks, touting tropical jungles, wildlife reserves, and cascading flora and fauna. Located along the Caribbean Sea, Belize offers over 185 miles of barrier reef - the largest in the northern hemisphere - family-friendly attractions, romantic escapes, and many other adventures.

With JetBlue’s entrance into Belize City, JetBlue becomes the only airline to offer nonstop service from New York’s JFK to Belize. Belize City will build on JetBlue’s success in the broader region, where it offers service to 26 countries within Latin America and the Caribbean. In recent years, the airline’s network strategy has focused on enhancing international markets, which has translated into current service to 40 international destinations. As a leader at New York’s JFK, JetBlue’s new route to Belize allows JetBlue to continue to grow in under-served geographies while bringing more choices and options to our customers.
